Looking to adopt a puppy or kitten? There are multiple things to consider before adopting. First, you have to be prepared to have this pet for 10-20 years. Owning a pet is a huge commitment that has to be thoroughly planned out so you are prepared for any circumstance. Then, you have to be educated on the pet you’re getting. Species, breed, age and sex all play a huge factor in the decision.
Puppies and kittens are usually available to be adopted by the age of 7-8 weeks. Depending on where they’re adopted from, they should come with their first set of vaccines and dewormer. Getting a full history of the vaccines and flea/parasite treatments given when you’re adopting is extremely beneficial. They will be due for the booster vaccines and another dewormer 1 month after the first set was given and then again 1 month later for the final set. Kittens may have been tested for leukemia before the adoption as well.
At the final set of vaccines the veterinarian will discuss spaying and neutering as the next step. Kittens are usually spayed or neutered at 6 months. Puppies, on the other hand, will depend on their breed. Small breeds are usually spayed or neutered at 6 months, but larger breeds may consider waiting until they are between 1-2 years. The veterinarian will discuss the pros and cons.
The next step will be the 1 year exam and vaccines. These are due 1 year after the final set of vaccines was given. At this time we will do a full physical exam, get your pet updated on vaccines and set them up with flea, tick and parasite treatments.
Pets are a wonderful addition to your family, but there is a lot to consider. You have to be prepared for any unexpected veterinary visits, training, house breaking, vacations and potential moves. So, know the history, future and enjoy having a new addition running around!
