When adopting a pet there are multiple things to consider – breed, sex, coat color, name, diet. There is one thing that’s frequently over looked and that is pet insurance. It is something that a lot of owners feel they don’t need, but regret it when their pet needs treatment or surgery unexpectedly. We all hope nothing ever happens to our pet, but there’s always a chance and it’s a relief when you know you have coverage. Whether it’s a chronic ear infection, or the pet that swallowed a toy, or the dog that now has a torn ACL – these things happen and unfortunately there is a cost involved with treatment.
There are many insurance companies now and different options of plans to review before choosing the one best suitable for you and your pet. Policies have a monthly premium, annual deductibles, sick/illness plans, wellness plans, and some restrictions depending on the breed and age of your pet. With most veterinary hospitals you pay them first and then a claim is sent to your insurance company where they reimburse you afterwards. Some insurance companies include Pets Plus Us, Trupanion, and 24PetWatch.
It is best to start pet insurance when your pet is at a young age. Waiting until they are older will have risks and setbacks involved, such as pre-existing conditions. If you decide against pet insurance please be sure you’re setting money aside to cover expected and unexpected expenses. Being diligent about preventive care for your pet will save you money in the long run. Don’t be a stranger at your veterinary clinic!
